Laurel wins in overtime
Laurel (72) Vs. New Brighton (64)
Jan 07, 2015
The Spartans dealt with adversity but powered through in their overtime win over Section 1-AA opponent New Brighton.

Laurel (4-1, 8-3) was without guard Mason Mraz for most of the second quarter with a knee injury and forward Jacob Wilson for most of the second half with an eye injury.

Wilson did not return to the game, but Mraz hit a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

“He struggled for most of the first half,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “His knee was bothering him but we kept telling him we had confidence in him and he definitely stepped up for us.”

Mraz finished with 17 points and 14 boards, while Wilson finished with a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds in limited action. Noah Wertz tallied 15 points and both Scott Siddall and Tucker Skerbetz totaled 10.

R.J. Debo led the Lions (1-4, 3-7) with a game-high 28 points.

The Spartans needed other players to step up with Mraz and Wilson missing extended time. They received that with contributions in the form of Skerbetz and forward Isici Layne.

“Any road section win is big,” Locke said. “We had several guys banged up and sick, Skerbetz stepped in and had a big 10. Isici Layne stepped up and battled inside. We needed everybody in every way possible.

“We know these guys can get the job done. We didn’t play very well, but we tell them to just keep fighting. Of all of the wins, I’m proud of this one because of the way we fought through adversity and sickness.”
