Balance keys Shenango win
Shenango (65) Vs. Summit Academy (49)
Jan 07, 2015
Four players hit double figures in Shenango’s Section 1-AA victory over host Summit Academy.

Ryan Smith led all scorers with 19 points, while Brenton Booher tallied 15 for the Wildcats (2-3, 6-4). Christian O’Hara and James Micco totaled 12 each for the victors.

“I just thought the guys did a good job of moving the ball quickly,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “We knocked down open shots tonight, the scoring was very balanced.

“I’d rather have four guys scoring 15 than one scoring 30. You can’t just focus on one.”

Dennis Richardson paced the Knights (0-4, 1-8) with 16 points.

The balanced scoring attack was impressive, but it was the lack of turnovers committed, three overall, that stuck out to McQuiston.

“The key going into the game was the turnovers,” McQuiston said. “I felt our guys were very composed tonight. I just thought the guys did a good job of moving the ball quickly. We knocked down open shots tonight, the scoring was very balanced. If you’re not turning the ball over, you get more opportunities to score. If we get opportunities, that’s going to be more beneficial to us.

“We played a great game against Sharon, but we had 22 turnovers and lost by nine (last Saturday). We cut that in half and we have 11 more chances. That’s the difference in the game, you have to take care of the ball.”

Shenango will celebrate the victory, but will have to turn around immediately for a matchup with nonsection opponent Mercer tonight, followed by a date with Riverside.

“I thought it was a good road win for us,” McQuiston said. “The guys came ready to play and we have to continue that. It’s going to be a battle like it is every night. Obviously it’s going to be a grind, we’ll enjoy it tonight and get ready tomorrow.”
