The Union High boys basketball team went to work in the second half last night.
The host Scotties turned up the heat after intermission en route to a 82-54 WPIAL Section 1-A win over Quigley Catholic.
Union (2-1 in the section, 2-4 overall) outscored the Spartans 53-29 after only leading by four points at the end of two quarters.
“First half, we played hard, but we didn’t play smart,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “We kept the turnovers down in the second half, we were able to finish them.”
Garrison Bell was the leader for the Scotties, falling just two steals shy of a triple-double. The junior posted a team-high 25 points, 10 boards and eight steals against the Spartans (0-3, 1-5).
“He gives us a lot of energy,” Stanley said. “He plays hard and he causes the opponents a lot of headaches.”
Cornell Charles added 15 points, while Jullian Johnson chipped in with 11 markers in the winning effort.
