WEXFORD — It is unknown if anyone passed out Saturday afternoon.

One thing’s for sure — Laurel’s fans did not take many breaths in the final minute of the WPIAL Class AA preliminary-round game at North Allegheny High School.

The Spartans survived a missed shot at the buzzer to post a 46-45 win over West Shamokin.

“It feels great,” Laurel’s Scott Siddall said. “Laurel basketball the past few years hasn’t been great, but we made the playoffs and got a win and that’s all that matters.”

Laurel (13-10) moves on to face Greensburg Central Catholic on a 8 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Township High School.

“We know they’re one of the better teams. We’re just going to go back to work,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “We feel that the section we’re in with Aliquippa, Beaver Falls and Neshannock — they’re three of the top five seeds and for a reason — is really tough. We’ve battled them all season and that really helps us. By no means is it going to be easy, but I think we relish that underdog role. We feel we can hang with them just based on the section we were in.”

The Wolves (17-6) posted an 11-10 lead after the first and pushed it to 17-14. However, Siddall swished his first 3-pointer of the day and the Spartans closed the half with a 9-2 run to grab a 23-19 halftime advantage.

After West Shamokin trimmed the deficit to 25-24 early in the third, Laurel responded with a 12-2 jaunt. Siddall helped spark the rally with two more treys. That burst gave the Spartans a 37-26 lead with 3:40 left in the quarter.

“Scott played well. He is a great shooter for us. We have multiple guys who can shoot it and can get hot,” Locke said. “Today, he got hot for us and he knocked those down for us. I am happy for him and glad he did it.

“At that point, we were telling them to put it away, put it away, put it away,” he continued. “But, you have to give West Shamokin credit because they kept fighting. Every time we needed to make a play, they made a play and cut it down a little bit. I am proud of the way our guys hung in there and fought. That’s just playoff basketball.”

Laurel was unable to continue its hot streak. The Wolves got themselves back in the game with an 8-2 run to close the frame with a 39-34 deficit.

“We hit a few in a row and my teammates tried to find me and they did,” Siddall said. “Then, West Shamokin went on a run just trying to get back in the game. We knew they’d try to make a run. They made the playoffs for a reason.”

The Spartans increased their lead to six, 46-40, with 3:16 to go, but West Shamokin went to a full-court press and silenced Laurel. The Wolves created turnovers and trimmed the deficit to 46-45 on Jake Hough’s steal and layup with 32 second to go.

After a missed free throw, West Shamokin had a chance to win the game. However, a shot clanged off the backboard at the buzzer.

“Absolutely, we’ll take it. We had a chance to put them away. But, to their credit, defensively they switched it up and caused us a bit of trouble and we made some mistakes,” Locke said. “We told the guys to keep fighting and we held on there.”

Siddall paced the Spartans with 16 points. Mason Mraz added nine.

Zac Horner and Hough both led the Wolves with 15 points.
