The Wilmington High girls basketball team put its playoff fate in District 10’s hands.

The Lady Greyhounds secured third place in District 10, Region 2-AA with a 55-25 win over visiting Greenville last night.

The district only guarantees the region champions a playoff berth. They are expected to between six and eight teams to its Class AA tournament, which begins next week.

“You never know what District 10 is gonna do, but it’s pretty safe to say we’re in,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “We’re going to prepare as if we are in, but we’ll know for sure this weekend.”

Wilmington (8-4, 15-7) finished two games behind co-region champions Mercer (10-2, 16-5) and Sharon (10-2, 15-7) in the standings. Sharon is coached by former New Castle High and Westminster College standout Maria Joseph.

“We started the season off with a bang and were cruising and cruising,” Sanford said. “Then, we went on the downhill portion of the roller coaster. I’m proud of the girls, we lost like five of seven games, but they were able to pull together and get back on the upswing. We played really well at the beginning of the season, but these past two games, we have played tremendously with each other. They’ve been feeding off each other. That’s the way to go.”

The Lady ’Hounds limited the Lady Trojans to just five points in the first half. Greenville (5-7, 7-12) managed six more in the third quarter.
“We were playing really, really aggressive man-to-man defense,” Sandford said. “We were in the full-court press.
They have some players injured, but we were really aggressive. That’s nice to see, because that’s our team philosophy. I’ve been saying all year that if you don’t play defense you won’t get the ball on offense.”

Alanna Elliott led Wilmington with 16 points, while Tessa Sikora tacked on 15. Cassidy Marett finished with 10.

“They’re the three seniors and tonight was senior night, so there’s always an extra push,” Sanford said. “What a way for them to finish up the regular season.”
