The Union High boys basketball team built some playoff momentum last night.
The host Scotties concluded the regular season by knocking off Riverside in nonsection action, 72-64. The Panthers compete in Class AA.
Union (10-12 overall) dropped its first six games to open the season, but turned it around to qualify for the WPIAL Class A playoffs.
“It’s always nice to finish on a win and finish with a little bit of confidence,” Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said.
Union built a 19-9 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 38-23 at the break. The Scotties owned a 58-33 advantage after three periods before Riverside (8-14) made a late run to make it close.
“I think our legs got a little tired in the fourth quarter,” Smialowski said. “We took care of the ball and hit our free throws.
“The first three quarters defensively we really got after it.”
Benjamin Young paced Union with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists. Jamie Hooks chipped in 12 markers and a game-best 16 rebounds. Anthony Rush added 11 points.
Zach Gould poured in a game-high 32 points for the Panthers.
