Mohawk (39) Vs. Beaver (29)
Feb 11, 2014
The Lady Warriors regrouped at halftime and rallied for a nonsection home win over the Lady Bobcats.
Mohawk (16-5) trailed 10-8 at the break. The Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Bobcats in the third stanza, 18-0.
“We just needed to come out and have more confidence offensively,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “We had some shots that we didn’t take in that first half. We weren’t being aggressive offensively.
“We told them to go out and play; just relax.”
Samantha Carr tallied 16 of her team-high 20 points in the pivotal third period for Mohawk.
“Sam was fighting herself in the first half,” O’Lare said. “She lit it up in the third quarter.
“When she’s on, she’s on. She felt confident.”
Lexi Posset registered 17 of her game-best 25 points in the fourth quarter for Beaver (15-6), which is coached by former Neshannock bench boss Greg Huston.
Mohawk trailed 8-1 early in the second quarter, but went on a 27-2 run through the end of the third quarter to take control.
The Lady Warriors’ Ashley McConnell drew the assignment of guarding Posset and O’Lare acknowledged the effort McConnell provided.
“She did a heck of a job on her,” he said. “She just hounded her all night.
“Posset caught fire in the fourth quarter. But Ashley did the job when we needed it done. We did enough work that when Posset got loose, it wasn’t enough.”
Both teams are bound for the WPIAL Class AA playoffs. The pairings will be released tonight.
“To beat another team that we think is a good program just gives us confidence going into the playoffs,” O’Lare said.
