Feb 08, 2014
The Neshannock High basketball team’s seniors went out in a big way last night.

Matt McKinney, Ernie Burkes, Ty Haswell, Marcus Giangiuli and Matt Seltzer combined for 64 points in the Lancers’ 76-52 WPIAL Section 2-AA win over visiting Laurel.

McKinney led the way with 25 points, including five 3-point field goals, while Burkes added 17 points, Ty Haswell 14, Marcus Giangiuli six and Matt Seltzer two. Senior Fred Mozzocio also saw action.

“Being senior night, everybody was very hyped,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “We came out of the gate and played very well. We had a good night defensively and a lot of our great defense led to points at the other end.”

The Lancers (10-4 section, 17-5 overall) took a 21-11 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 39-20 at the half. Haswell had all 14 of his points before intermission. Haswell finished with 11 rebounds, while Burkes added six assists and Giangiuli five rebounds and three steals. Neshannock shot 24 of 51 from the field (47.1 percent), to Laurel’s (28.6 percent). The Lancers won the battle of the boards 36-26.

Neshannock moves on to the playoffs as the third-place team in the section behind Aliquippa and Beaver Falls at 9-4 in the section, 16-5 overall. Laurel (7-7, 12-9) moves on as the fourth-place team.

The regular season has been a roller coaster for the Spartans, who own a pair of five-game winning streaks but have suffered through three- and five-game losing skids. Both five-game winning skeins have been halted by the Lancers.

Josh Dando and Jacob Wilson paced Laurel with 11 points each.

“We just didn’t play well and Neshannock played really well,” Spartans coach Ken Locke said. “You leave guys like Matt McKinney open and that’s what happens. They were on fire tonight.”
