Mercer sinks free throws, Wilmington
Wilmington (61) Vs. Mercer (62)
Feb 08, 2014
Mercer’s Logan Clarke made a pair of free throws with under six seconds left in the game to hand the host Greyhounds a 62-61 District 10, Region 2-AA setback.

Wilmington was able to get off a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it missed its mark.

“This is the second game in a row that came down to the wire,” said Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch, referencing a 62-59 overtime loss to Reynolds. “I can’t question our effort and desire. Mercer just came through in the clutch. It’s not like my guys didn’t. We’re just in a rut right now. We just left points on the floor.”

The loss dropped Wilmington (6-4 11-9) into a third-place tie in the region with the Mustangs (6-4, 11-8) behind West Middlesex (9-0, 14-5) and Reynolds (7-4, 14-5).

The Region 2 champion Big Reds will help determine who will join them in the District 10 playoffs.

West Middlesex hosts Mercer tonight and Reynolds on Tuesday before heading to Wilmington on Friday.

Mercer ends the regular season at Lakeview on Friday, while the Greyhounds travel to Greenville on Tuesday.

“We have two region games left and I think we need to win one more to get in,” Jeckavitch said. “We control our own fate right now. We need to take care of our own business and hopefully, we’ll do that over these next two games.”

Wilmington had issues scoring in the first half and trailed 26-23 entering the second half.

“It seemed like there was a lid on our basket in the first half,” Jeckavitch said. “We had opportunities to score. We were attacking the basket, but our shots were spinning in and out.”

Travis Brumbaugh and Spencer DeMedal led the Greyhounds with 13 points apiece. Jordan Smith posted a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and Rocco Fagan chipped in with 11 points and six caroms.
