Jan 24, 2014
The Wilmington High girls basketball team made a run at Sharon last night but came up short.
The Lady Tigers connected on a handful of free throws down the stretch to escape with a 66-56 District 10, Region 2-AA victory over the visiting Lady Greyhounds.
Wilmington (4-3, 10-6) was within five points late in the fourth quarter, but was forced to foul former New Castle High and Westminster College standout Maria Joseph’s Sharon club (5-1, 9-5) down the stretch.
The Lady Tigers made 12 of 24 freebies on the night, while the Lady ’Hounds managed just 4 of 8.
“It was a huge game for both teams, especially for us,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “It was a great game. I don’t think the 10-point spread shows how close it was until the last 30 seconds. It was a hard-fought battle.”
Wilmington grabbed an 11-9 lead going into the second quarter and Sharon managed to knot the score at 26 at halftime. The Lady Tigers took a 46-39 lead entering the final period.
Alanna Elliott led Wilmington with 18 points and Tessa Sikora was next with 12. Cassidy Marett finished with 10.
