Shaffer sparks Laurel girls
Laurel (68) Vs. Farrell (44)
Jan 22, 2014
Junior Ellen Shaffer shrugged off an illness to pump in 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Class AA Lady Spartans in the nonsection win over visiting Class A Farrell.

Jessica Conrad also posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals.

“That team was huge, so that was impressive,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “They’re a big team and at times, they were getting fourth and fifth shots. If they put them in, this is a different ballgame. I have no complaints about our boxing out. Based on sheer size, they were able to get the rebound.

“We were trying to limit (Shaffer). She was rotating in and out every two minutes, so she only played half the first half. I credit (Shaffer’s 18 first-half points) to some offensive rebounding and some great passes from our guards. We had some really nice passes.”

Laurel (10-5) reached the 10-win mark for the first since 2005, Shevitz reported.

“We’re really excited about that,” she said. “But right now, we’re focusing on the Mohawk game Thursday. That’s going to be a big game.”

The Lady Spartans handed out 20 assists on 29 field goals.

“Any night you have 40 points off passes, it’s going to be a fun night,” Shevitz, who wasn’t happy with Laurel’s 8 for 20 effort from the charity stripe. “I told them in the locker room at halftime, that this was our best first half of the season. The choices of whether to shoot or to pass were flawless. They knew when to take it or when to dish it. It was fun to watch. I just loved it.”

Kristin Dicks finished the game with eight points, eight assists and five steals.
