Neshannock rolls to win
Neshannock (90) Vs. Wilmington (64)
Jan 20, 2014
The host Lancers outscored the Greyhounds 31-10 in the second quarter to take control and cruise to a nonconference win in the “Battle of the Border”.

Neshannock’s second-quarter outburst led to a 49-20 lead at the half.

“We came out extremely slow,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “Neshannock is one of those teams that can put up points very quickly; they were ready to play and we weren’t.

“Our defensive plan didn’t work. They basically ran all over us in the first half. We played better in the second half, but we have to play four good quarters.”

Both teams were coming off tough losses Friday. Neshannock (12-3) dropped an 84-67 road decision to Riverside in Section 2-AA action. The Greyhounds (8-5) lost on the road to West Middlesex in a battle for first place in District 10, Region 2-AA play, 51-44.

“Friday was very frustrating for us,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “I was frustrated with myself because I should have done more. We played with pretty good energy on Friday, but we just needed to tweak some things. The guys came out with great energy and focus against Wilmington.”

Ernie Burkes paced all scorers with 22 points for the Lancers — including 12 in the first half — and Matt McKinney was next with 19. Ethan Moose tallied 12 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Jimmy Powers cashed in 11 markers with four assists and Fred Mozzocio added 10 points.

Burkes handed out a game-high seven assists and Jimmy Medure pulled down 10 boards with his eight points, which included a dunk.

“The games in which we’ve played very well, our scoring has been very balanced,” Corey said. “Our assists have always been 16 or above. We had 16 assists against Wilmington. This was a good performance for us.”

Rocco Fagan delivered a team-best 16 points for the Greyhounds and Jordan Smith supplied 15 markers, six rebounds and four assists. Travis Brumbaugh chipped in with 10 points.
