’Cats hold on for win
Shenango (54) Vs. Mercer (51)
Jan 16, 2014
The Wildcats grabbed a commanding 13-point lead in the first half and had to fend off a late Mustangs rally in the nonconference game.

Sam Sibeto scored all 13 of his points in the first half as Shenango (6-7) raced out to 18-11 and 35-22 first quarter and halftime leads.

“Our guys did a nice job of getting out to a quick start,” Wildcats coach Bob McQuiston said. “Sibeto did a good job of crashing the glass and he shot it really well. He carried us in the first half. He’s really athletic and can make some athletic plays. He did that for us.”

Mercer (5-7) outscored the ’Cats 29-19 over the final 16 minutes.

“We let Mercer get back into it,” McQuiston said. “We seemed a little tired, a little flat in the second half. They could’ve been tired. Coming off a barn-burner (Tuesday) night (against Mohawk), you have to expect that a little bit. It’s always tough when you have back-to-back games, especially when (the second game) isn’t a section game.

“There wasn’t a lot of emotion or a lot of energy. It just wasn’t there, but we kept our composure and played well enough to win. With a big section game on Friday (against Beaver Falls), you hope you’re not looking ahead to that game, because sometimes, you get caught up in that.”

Brenton Booher led all scorers with 14 points, while McQuiston credited Rocco Fiorilli and Jake McMillen for their efforts off the bench.

“McMillen came in and gave us some good minutes off the bench,” the Shenango coach said. “We were in foul trouble and he was able to come in and play some good ‘D’ for us. He had four or five rebounds for us. Rocco brings energy to our team. Late in the game, he came in and picked it up defensively for us when we needed him to.

“I thought Booher had a good game shooting the ball. He had two threes and had some drives to the basket.”
