Mohawk girls secure win
Mohawk (37) Vs. Riverside (30)
Jan 10, 2014
The Lady Warriors shrugged off a nearly two-week break between games to secure the Section 2-AA road victory.
Mohawk (3-1, 9-1) hasn’t played since a 49-26 victory over Ellwood City and has only had four practices during that time due to holidays and inclement weather, coach Mike O’Lare reported.
“We haven’t played since Dec. 28,” O’Lare said. “That’s a pretty valid reason (for the slow start). We knew it’d be rough.”
Both teams managed just 10 points in the first half.
“I don’t care what the situation is, you should never be rusty on the defensive end,” O’Lare said. “It’s all about effort on defense. It takes a little bit of time to get your offense back.”
The Lady Warriors shook off the offensive rust in the second half, using a 17-9 advantage in the third quarter to stake a 27-19 lead entering the final eight minutes of action.
“It was a little of that,” O’Lare said of his team looking a little rusty in the first half. “Our kids made some plays on offense in the second half. Our defense led into our offense in the third quarter.”
Samantha Carr registered a game-high 14 points, while Holly Duncan was credited with a team-high 10 rebounds.
“To be honest with you, Holly is the kind of kid that doesn’t show up in articles,” O’Lare said. “She doesn’t do a lot of scoring. Defensive battles are the kinds of games that she shines in. She only had three points, but she came up big by playing great defensively. She’s so valuable to our team and brings a lot to it. She’s the glue that holds our team together on the defensive end.”
