Slow start dooms Union
Union (46) Vs. Western Beaver (69)
Jan 04, 2014
The host Union Scotties quickly fell behind 17-0 before dropping their Section 1-A opener, 69-46, to Western Beaver.

“I didn’t think the intensity was there from the get-go,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “We weren’t there mentally. We just weren’t ready to play tonight. That’ll bite you in big games and it did tonight.”

The Scotties (0-1, 3-8) rebounded from the slow start to get within seven in the third quarter before Western Beaver (1-0, 8-1) pulled away.

“We started to make shots and defend better,” Smialowski said. “Good things started to happen for us, but they made another run on us. Basketball is a game of runs. It’s just a matter of who will make more runs. It just snowballed on us.”

Benjamin Young was the lone Union player to reach double figures with 19.

Western Beaver’s Nick Miller dropped a game-high 28 points on the Scotties, while Steve Robison added 15.
