Shenango (65) Vs. Riverside (61)
Jan 04, 2014
James Micco pumped in a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds to lift the visiting Shenango Wildcats to a 65-61 Section 2-AA victory over Riverside last night.

Micco scored 15 points in the first half as Shenango (1-3, 3-6) roared out to a 37-31 halftime lead. He also pulled down six offensive rebounds.

“James Micco had a tremendous game,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “Our guys did a good job of finding him. They were running sets for him and he did a good job of finishing in the paint.”

The ’Cats’ defense limited Riverside to single digits in the second and third quarters. The Panthers scored 22 in the first quarter and 21 in the fourth.

“We started to pick up our defensive effort a little more and our rebounding was better,” McQuiston said. “We didn’t give them many second chances. In the first quarter, they got easy buckets that we knew were coming. They were getting open looks and were knocking them down.”

McQuiston’s club opened a healthy second half lead, but allowed Riverside to claw back into the game.

Junior Ryan Smith nailed a 3-pointer to hand Shenango a 63-59 lead late in the game before knocking a pair of free throws to close out the win.

Smith finished with 12 points.

“We have to do a better job of closing it out,” McQuiston said. “Their press hurt us. We have to do a better job of communicating and having good possessions.”

Zach Gould posted a game-high 28 points, while Logan Sheridan tacked on 20 for the Panthers (1-3, 4-7).
