McKinney paces Lancers
Neshannock (78) Vs. Ellwood City (51)
Dec 30, 2013
Once again, the Neshannock High boys basketball team used a strong shooting performance to post a victory.

Saturday night, the Lancers drained 10 3-pointers en route to a 78-51 win over Ellwood City Lincoln to claim the championship of their own holiday tournament. Neshannock (8-1) swished 10 treys in Friday’s 98-42 win over Saegertown as well.

Tournament MVP Matt McKinney led the way for the Lancers with 25 points and five 3-pointers.

“I thought that was a good win for us,” Neshannock coach John Corey said. “Ellwood is one of the better teams we’ve played to this point. I think they are a lot better than their record shows. They played scrappy and hard. I thought our guys played very well.”

Neshannock held a 14-12 lead after the first quarter, but expanded it to 34-21 at halftime.

Ernie Burkes, an all-tournament team pick, had 15 points and eight assists for the Lancers. Ethan Moose had 15 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Matt Seltzer added eight points and nine rebounds in the win.

Tanner Walsh and Frederick Roth both had 14 points for the Wolverines (2-8). Nick Ioanilli added six points and Justin Vetica had five. Roth and Vetica earned all-tournament team honors.
