The Laurel girls gradually pulled away to claim the championship of the Union Booster Tournament over Union, 54-30, last night.

Laurel (5-4) scored four late points in the third quarter to turn a 10-point lead into a 14-point cushion going to the fourth.

“Laurel played really well,” said first-year Union coach Larry Ondako. “They’re just bigger and better; they wore on us.

“They had more than we had. All in all, it was a good game.”

Said Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz, “I thought we should have pulled away from them a lot sooner. I think we can play better defense and we’re going to have to play better defense. But, a win is a win and I’m very excited for them to get the win.”

Jessica Conrad netted a game-best 20 points for the Lady Spartans and Kristin Dicks delivered 14. Conrad collected a team-high eight rebounds, while Ellen Shaffer added six.

Conrad was named the tournament’s MVP and Rachael Baker claimed all-tournament status for the winners.

Laurel turned the ball over a season-low three times.

Tyanna Harris registered 12 points for Union (2-7).

Harris and Hannah Booth were named to the all-tournament team for the Lady Scots.
