Laurel claims consolation game
Wilmington (61) Vs. Laurel (76)
Dec 28, 2013
Laurel pulled away in the fourth quarter to claim the consolation verdict over Wilmington, 76-61, last night in the Union Booster Tournament.

Five players scored in double figures for Laurel (3-5), led by Scott Siddall with 20 points.

Jacob Wilson and Mason Mraz followed with 14 markers each. Mraz pulled down eight rebounds and Wilson added five boards with four steals.

Zachary Wilson notched 12 markers, a game-high 16 boards and four steals for the Spartans. Noah Wertz chipped in 10 points.

“We’ve talked about our balance all year long,” said second-year Laurel coach Ken Locke. “We have six or seven guys that can put up double figures. That’s what makes it difficult for us to match up with.”

Wilmington was coming off a triple-overtime loss to Union in the first round.

“I do believe it did a play factor,” Greyhounds coach Mike Jeckavitch said of the marathon loss. “When you have such a quick turnaround like that, it’s tough to recover.

“We started extremely slow, but we took the lead at one point. Laurel wore us out, though. We fought hard, we just didn’t execute very well. That probably does have to do with tired legs.”

Spencer DeMedal paced the Greyhounds (4-3) with 17 points, including 13 in the third quarter. Travis Brumbaugh was next with 13. Rocco Fagan added 10. Jordan Smith a team-high 10 rebounds for the Greyhounds and Fagan added five assists.

“I thought Spencer stepped up and played well,” Jeckavitch said. “He was getting transition points and he attacked the basket, too.”

Fagan was named to the all-tournament team.

The Spartans were 33 of 79 from the field, compared to 22 of 63 for Wilmington.
