Dec 17, 2013
Tessa Sikora propelled the Lady Greyhounds to a narrow noncoference home win over Laurel.
Sikora supplied a game-high 28 points with 17 rebounds and seven blocks.
“She has just been a force to be reckoned with this year,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “Every game she has played, she has had a double-double. She has just been doing phenomenally well.
“Her game is definitely a couple of levels above what it was last year. She just goes to work.”
Said Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz, “Tessa had one of those nights. Every time it got in her hands, it went in the hoop. It happens. She had a hot hand. Every now and then you have a night like that.”
Wilmington (4-1) pulled down 52 rebounds, compared to 42 for Laurel (3-2).
“It was just back and forth the whole game,” Sanford said. “It was a hard-fought game and we stuck with it.”
Cassidy Marett added 11 points and 12 rebounds for Wilmington and Jamie Thompson tallied 11 rebounds.
“We knew going in it was going to be a good game,” Sanford said. “We just had to come out and get on it from the start.
“We used a full-court press and they were able to break through it at times. I thought it was just a great defensive effort, especially in the last three minutes.”
Jessica Conrad and Ellen Shaffer supplied 19 points each for the Lady Spartans (3-2). Brooke Dicks delivered 12 markers. Shaffer added 14 rebounds and eight blocks, while Conrad pulled down seven boards. Dicks handed out seven assists.
Laurel was 19 of 31 at the foul line, while Wilmington was 17 of 28.
