The Union High girls basketball team broke into the win column last night.
The Lady Scots utilized a strong defensive effort to capture a 32-21 WPIAL Section 1-A road win over Western Beaver.
“It’s nice for the kids to get a win,” said first-year Union coach Larry Ondako. “We’re getting better, that’s the biggest thing. I think we’ve improved every game.”
It’s the second game in a row the Lady Scots (1-1 section, 1-4 overall) have held the opposition to under 27 points. Union dropped a 26-21 verdict to Sewickley Academy last week.
“We’ve done a nice job defensively from the get-go this season,” Ondako said. “We played good defense against Western Beaver, too.”
Tyanna Harris rifled in a game-high 17 points, 10 coming in the first half for the Lady Scots. Skylar Thompson chipped in with 10 markers.
“We’ve improved the most offensively and confidence-wise,” Ondako said of his team since the opener. “They’re learning what to expect and I thought everyone played well.”
Lauren Ranone netted eight points for the Lady Golden Beavers (0-2, 0-6).
Union built a 17-11 halftime advantage and pushed it to 24-14 going to the fourth quarter.
