Lady Lancers cruise to win
Neshannock (59) Vs. New Brighton (12)
Dec 17, 2013
The Lady Lancers jumped out to 22-1 and 35-3 first-half leads and cruised to the Section 2-AA road victory.

Madison McHale made three 3-pointers and Erin Warvell chipped in two in the first quarter as Neshannock (2-0, 5-0) won at New Brighton for just the second time in coach Luann Grybowski’s tenure.

“We jumped out to a big lead and we kind of set the pace from there,” Grybowski said. “In the past, we haven’t played well there. Last year, we got our first win down there since I started here. For whatever reason, we just don’t play well down there.”

Host New Brighton (0-2, 0-5) managed just four field goals and didn’t reach double figures until the fourth quarter against Neshannock’s defense.

“They really didn’t have many shooters,” Grybowski said. “We played some zone and some man, but I think they’re kind of down this year. They had some kids graduate from last year and I think he had to sit some kids because of disciplinary reasons. I’d like to think it was our defense, but I don’t think they were at full strength.”

McHale led the Lady Lancers with a season-high 22 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Tayler Grybowski posted 12 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and four assists. Warvell added nine points, five assists and four steals.

“Erin, Madison and Tayler played well,” said Luann Grybowski, who is Tayler’s mom. “They all defended. They all rebounded and they all passed the ball. It was a good output for them. Those are the three with the most experience and that’s what I expect out of them. I think they expect that themselves and from each other.

“They passed the ball well. They were in a zone and we made the extra pass. We were able to find the open guy, which was good to see. If teams are going to play a zone, you have to shoot well and pass the ball to beat it. We did that tonight.”
