Dec 10, 2013
The Lady Spartans shook off foul trouble in the second half to pull away for a nonsection home win over Freedom.
The Lady Bulldogs (2-1) hit six 3-pointers, two of which came in the second quarter, to close to 28-23 at the break.
“They were in the one-and-one in the first quarter,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “We were in a lot of foul trouble and we had to go to our bench.
“The goal was to go in at half with the lead and then finish the game with our horses. We weathered the storm.”
Jessica Conrad paced four Lady Spartans (2-0) players in double figures with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Nine of Conrad’s points came in the fourth quarter. Ellen Shaffer was next with 13 markers and a team-best 15 rebounds.
“They both played wonderful,” Shevitz said of Conrad and Shaffer.
Brooke Dicks tossed in 11 markers for the winners and Rachael Baker added 10.
Joann Barlamas netted 11 points for Freedom.
“Freedom is a good team with good outside shooters,” Shevitz said. “They are very physical. They challenged us, but we held in there mentally.”
