Neshannock girls beat New Castle
Neshannock (45) Vs. New Castle (43)
Dec 09, 2013
Madison McHale scored 20 points as the Lady Lancers captured the New Castle Tipoff Tournament with the narrow win.

Neshannock (2-0) held a 14-13 lead after the first and a 29-19 halftime advantage. The Lady ’Canes (1-1) rallied in the third to trim the deficit to 35-30 after three quarters, but could not overcome the Lady Lancers.

“We had a 10-point lead going into halftime. We gave up two quick 3s to start the third and we gave that team a reason to believe. New Castle played hard. I can’t take anything away with them. (Head coach Scott Dibble) has done a good job with what he has. He lost a lot to graduation,” said Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski, who is in her fifth year at Neshannock after coaching New Castle. “I don’t think we defended well. We definitely didn’t box out. If we don’t get better at those two things, we’ll be in trouble.

“We didn’t shoot it exceptionally well and that’s a credit to their defense. They are a lot quicker than what we are. We were lucky to get out of there with a win, we really were. I am happy with starting off 2-0. It’s a good start. We just have to work to get better every day.”

McHale, who was named the tournament’s MVP, added eight rebounds. Tayler Grybowski (five points, seven rebounds, three steals) and Stephanie Paras (eight points) joined her on the all-tournament team. Erin Warvell had five points and three assists.

Darrian Johnson led New Castle (1-1) with 14 points, while Jaidyn Eggleston had 13. Both earned all-tournament team honors. Velvet Wade added seven points.
