The Spartans used a 21-point fourth quarter to post the triumph at the Ellwood City Tipoff Tournament.
Laurel (2-0) had a 17-16 lead after the first, but the Scotties (0-2) rallied for a 32-31 halftime advantage. The Spartans went ahead, 45-42, heading into the fourth.
Mason Mraz paced Laurel with 15 points and nine rebounds. Zachary Wilson, who had 12 rebounds and four steals, and Noah Wertz both had 13 points. Jacob Wilson added 11 points. Josh Dando had one point, but was lauded for his defensive effort on Union’s Benjamin Young, who had 14 points.
“I thought our guys hustled and played hard for four quarters. I was happy with that. Dando absolutely did an unbelievable job defensively for us,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “He was on Young and five points came when Dando was taking a rest. He did a tremendous job.”
