Laurel rolls in Cornell Tipoff opener
Laurel (72) Vs. Aliquippa (27)
Dec 06, 2013
Junior Ellen Shaffer scored a career-high 26 points, including 12 in the first quarter, to lead Laurel to a 72-27 win over Aliquippa in the Cornell Tipoff Tournament.
“It was a nice first win,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “Aliquippa is young. We have everyone back and they’re building, so it was a mismatch. It was nice to get everyone in and empty my bench the first game.
“We played well as a team, we had 20 assists. They were very unselfish. Our defense was really good tonight. Our guards played really tough defense up front. Ellen (Shaffer) really filled up the lane.”
Brooke Dicks added 11 points for the winners.
South Allegheny was supposed to play host Cornell in last night’s nightcap, but its bus broke down on the way to the game. South Allegheny will play Cornell today. The rest of the tournament will be rescheduled a later time and date, according to Shevitz.
