Mohawk pulls out win in opening thriller
Mohawk (40) Vs. Mercer (38)
Dec 06, 2013
Melissa Verlotte made a layup with just under a minute left and the Mohawk High girls made it stand up.
The Lady Warriors edged Mercer 40-38 in their season opener in the Mohawk Tipoff Classic last night.
Verlotte’s shot put Mohawk up 40-35. The Lady Mustangs made a 3-pointer to pull back to within a pair, but the Lady Warriors held them off down the stretch.
“With a whole new group of kids and having to find starters, I was very pleased with the win,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “ This is a great way to start the season confidence-wise.”
The Lady Warriors jumped to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and were up 25-19 at the half, but did not score in the third quarter, necessitating a fourth-quarter rally.
“The kids could have lost their composure in that third quarter, but they didn’t,” O’Lare said. “They stayed within themselves and then they were able to make some plays in the fourth quarter when we needed them.”
Verlotte led the winners with nine points.
Mohawk plays Wilmington at 6 p.m. today.
