Lady ’Hounds edge Neshannock
Wilmington (42) Vs. Neshannock (41)
Feb 11, 2013
Wilmington’s Hannah Drake made a layup with about a minute left for the winning margin in a nonregion matchup against visiting Neshannock.

Drake’s bucket put the Lady Greyhounds (8-12) up, 42-40. She netted all nine of her points in the fourth quarter.

“Drake came off the bench and she was a major spark for us,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “She’s been doing it quite a bit for us all season. She has a nice shot and she’s great at driving to the hoop.”

The Lady Lancers (11-11) missed a couple of shots on the offensive end. With six seconds left, Neshannock inbounded the ball and Tayler Grybowski was fouled. Grybowski split a pair of free throws, making the second, to cut the deficit to one.

Neshannock had to foul twice because Wilmington wasn’t in the bonus. The Lady Greyhounds went to the line with just a half second left for a one-and-one. They missed the first attempt and the Lady Lancers didn’t have time for a desperation heave.

“This was a tough one to lose,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “To finish the year with four games in six days is tough.

“I kind of knew we would be flat, but we still should have won. It’s not the way I wanted to end the regular season. You always want to finish over .500 in the regular season. It is an improvement from last year and that’s what you want to do every year.”

Wilmington outrebounded Neshannock, 46-29.

“Rebounding haunted us again,” Luann Grybowski said. “They killed us on the boards.”

Madison McHale recorded 18 points on 8-of-20 shooting for the Lady Lancers. Alexandra Fischer was next with eight points and Tayler Grybowski contributed seven markers and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Cassidy Burrelli added five boards for the guests.

Alanna Elliott tossed in 13 points for the Lady Greyhounds and Tessa Sikora was next with 11.

“I told the girls after the game that we were a team that played mentally tough against Neshannock,” Sanford said. “That’s what we’ve been lacking all season.”

Neshannock was 17 of 67 from the floor, compared to 17 of 45 for Wilmington.
