Rochester (40) Vs. Union (36)
Feb 08, 2013
The Lady Scots came up short on the road in a Section 1-A loss to Rochester.

Union’s loss forces a three-way tie for second with the Lady Rams (8-4, 11-11) and Cornell (8-4, 11-9).

It’s the fifth loss in the last six games for the Lady Scots (8-4, 11-9).

“We wanted to be in second by ourselves, and we had the opportunity to do it,” Union coach Brian Fadden said. “Rochester made a couple of plays at the end and we had a couple of shots go in and out.”

The Lady Rams opened the game on a 12-0 run and held a 12-5 lead after one quarter. The Lady Scots finally got on the board with about 20 seconds left in the opening stanza.

“Rochester plays very physical,” Fadden said. “We had a couple of turnovers in the first quarter and we missed a couple of shots.

“We weren’t able to capitalize on our opportunities early and it got us in a hole quickly.”

Union allowed just 12 total points in the second and third quarters to close to within 24-21 going to the final frame.

“Defensively, we played very well. If we can play defense like that, we ‘ll be very competitive. Your defense will keep you in the game.”

Union took its only lead at 29-27, but Rochester quickly scored two straight field goals to capture the lead for good.

Marissa Heaney netted a team-high 21 points for the Lady Scots, including 13 in the fourth quarter. She made four 3-pointers in the final quarter. Twin sister Miranda Heaney was next with 10 markers.

Union made eight 3-pointers for the game, six by Marissa and a pair by Miranda.

“We were just running our normal offense,” Fadden said. “Marissa and Miranda took advantage of the open looks they got and they made the most of their opportunities.”

Demi McFrazier paced the Lady Rams with 23 points.
