Ellwood boys end with loss
West Allegheny (54) Vs. Ellwood City (44)
Feb 07, 2013
Ellwood City Lincoln ended its season with a WPIAL Section 2-AAA loss to visiting West Allegheny.

“We played them even,” Wolverines first-year coach Anthony Ovial said. “That’s a team that is going to the playoffs, and it’s good to know we can play with a playoff team and give ourselves a chance.”

Ellwood (0-12 section, 3-19 overall) closed out its season winless in section and the losers of seven straight. Despite that, Ovial is encouraged by what his boys brought on a day-to-day basis.

“I thought effort-wise, there wasn’t a single night we didn’t come with effort. I thought every single night we played hard,” he said. “Every single night our effort and preparation was there. It’s not easy to do that when you only win three games. That speaks tremendously about the leadership our seniors displayed this year.

“We’ve put ourselves in position with that work that there is a lot of good things we can build on. My big concern is where we are heading. I thought Mario Greco had a nice year for us. Nick Aloi had a really solid year. The guys played their butts off every single night.”

The score remained deadlocked at 30-all after the first half. Aloi scored 19 of his 30 points in the opening quarters.

“They tried to take Nick away a little bit in the second half,” Ovial said. “They were successful in spurts. He had 11 in the second half. Other guys were able to put the ball in the hoop a little bit in the second half.”

West Allegheny (5-6, 11-10) held Ellwood to 14 points in the second half to close out the victory, as the Wolverines failed to find a scorer to complement Aloi. Michael Miara had a team-high 22 points, including the team’s four 3-pointers, for the victors.
