Wilmington girls win big
Wilmington (60) Vs. Jamestown (24)
Feb 07, 2013
Wilmington had no troubles putting away winless Jamestown in nonconference play.

“We’re coming off a couple losses. I’ve made comments about mental toughness and things like that. This game alludes to that as well,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said. “When we face a team that is challenging, we crumble under that pressure. When we do well against a team, we think we’re going to do a well against them going in.”

Wilmington (7-12) allowed just four points to the Lady Muskies in the first half before making the switch to its junior varsity squad in the third quarter.

“We are playing better (defensively) despite what happened against Sharpsville (a loss) earlier this week,” Sanford said. “Our stamina is better in man-to-man and our communication is better in a zone defense. We are generally able to slow teams down.”

On the team’s senior night, Carly Christofferson and Sarah Slonaker, both seniors, combined for 12 points. Slonaker had a career-high 12 rebounds as well.

“Sarah’s never had that many rebounds. She was playing like it’s her last home game and she went after it,” Sanford said. “Carly stepped up and started to shoot the ball. They used their emotions properly this evening.”

Alanna Elliott paced the winners with 16 points. Tessa Sikora was next with nine.

“It’s somebody different stepping up each time,” Sanford said. “It’s kind of a struggle because you don’t have that go-to person. But it’s positive because the opponent doesn’t know who to look out for. It serves two purposes, both good and bad.”
