The fourth quarter was good to the New Castle High girls basketball team last night.
The Lady ’Canes hit for 25 markers in the final period to hold off Moon in a nonsection encounter at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House, 58-48.
“We’re just giving up too many points and giving up too much penetration,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said. “In a big game it will come back to haunt you.”
The Lady ’Canes (9-1), ranked third by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, will play a big game on Tuesday in a boys and girls doubleheader at the Field House against fifth-ranked Butler. New Castle is 5-0 in WPIAL Section 3-AAAA play, while Butler checks in at 4-0 in the section and 13-1 overall.
Tasia Wise paced the Lady ’Canes with 20 points to go along with five rebounds, while Logan Hartman added 18 markers and a game-best nine boards.
Abby Allen handed out seven assists and Jazelle Dennis was next with five.
Becca Pollack netted 20 points for the Lady Tigers (3-10).
New Castle was 23 of 49 from the field, compared to 18 of 45 for Moon.
The Lady ’Canes won the rebounding battle, 39-26.
