The Wilmington High boys basketball team has embraced its role as spoiler.
The Greyhounds dampened the playoff hopes of District 10, Region 2-AA rival Reynolds in a 63-45 road victory last night.
“We played loose. We started five underclassmen and knew Reynolds was fighting for a playoff spot,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “That was something our kids were amped about.”
Wilmington (3-6 region, 6-12 overall) had 14 steals, with five coming from Josiah Bloise, who also had seven points. The Raiders (4-6, 12-8) fell to fourth in the region with the loss.
“The kids came out defensively and really played well. The effort and intensity didn’t stop,” Jeckavitch said. “We created a lot of turnovers on a lot of pressure.”
The Greyhounds received scoring from nine different players, a common trend in the team’s six wins this season. Jordan Smith paced the winners with 11 points. Rocco Fagan followed with 10 and Travis Brumbaugh chipped in nine.
