Lady ’Canes outlast Ellwood
New Castle (59) Vs. Ellwood City (56)
Feb 05, 2013
The New Castle High girls basketball team found a way to push through for a win last night.

The Lady ’Canes conquered foul trouble and fatigue for a 59-56 WPIAL Section 2-AAA overtime win over Ellwood City Lincoln at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

Three New Castle players had four fouls late in regulation. The Lady ’Canes (4-7 section, 8-13 overall) managed to overcome it, using just one bench player the whole game.

“We sat back in a zone a lot in overtime because of the foul trouble,” first-year New Castle coach Scott Dibble said. “Not having much on the bench takes a lot out of them. But they’ve been doing it all year and they’re used to it.”

The Lady ’Canes missed a shot just before the buzzer at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Rachael Razzano made two foul shots with 30 seconds to go in the extra period, giving New Castle a 59-56 advantage. The Lady ’Canes fouled on the other end with just less than five seconds left and the Lady Wolverines (2-10, 9-13) missed the front-end of the one-and-one and New Castle survived.

“You want to keep the ball in the hands of your best shooter in that situation,” Dibble said of Razzano going to the line. “Rachael, being a senior, stepped up and did her job to give us some breathing room.”

New Castle built a 15-7 advantage after one quarter and held a 28-25 halftime lead.

“Another slow start against New Castle had us fighting our way back again,” Lady Wolverines coach Jolene Servick said. “We didn’t get things started until the end of the first quarter.”

Kelsey Scott paced the Lady ’Canes with 23 points. Razzano and Dana Perrotta contributed 12 markers apiece for the winners.

Scott was 13 of 15 at the foul line for New Castle.

“I thought Kelsey had a real nice game,” Dibble said. “I’ve been challenging her a lot lately to play a full 32 minutes and fight through the tiredness.

“She came to play tonight. Dana, the whole team really, came through for us. It was a total team effort.”

Said Servick, “We didn’t handle Kelsey Scott and we let her drive the lane which sent her to the foul line numerous times.”

The Lady ’Canes were 26 of 36 at the foul line, compared to 16 of 21 for Ellwood City.

Asia Borders recorded 14 points to lead Ellwood City in its season finale.
