Feb 05, 2013
A strong offense propelled the Lady Scots past visiting Aliquippa in Section 1-A action.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Union (8-3, 11-8).
“The whole game, we kept the ball moving really well,” Lady Scots coach Brian Fadden said. “Tonight we were making the most of our offensive opportunities.”
Union led 31-24 and pulled away in the second half.
Twin sisters Miranda Heaney and Marissa Heaney netted 19 points apiece to lead the Lady Scots. Miranda Heaney handed out 10 assists.
Hannah Booth was next with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the victors. Allison Bertolino pulled down 11 boards.
“I thought we rebounded the ball well,” Fadden said. “Aliquippa is a big team, but we did a good job controlling their size.”
DeShawnde West posted 14 points to lead the Lady Quips (3-9, 3-17).
The win gives Union a shot at finishing in second place in the section. The Lady Scots must beat Rochester on the road Thursday to have a chance to do so. Cornell (7-3, 10-8) is battling Union for second place.
The Lady Scots won the first meeting against the Lady Rams (7-4, 10-11), 45-36.
“It was a real tough game the first time against Rochester,” Fadden said. “We match up pretty well with them. It won’t be an easy task for us, but we have a mature group and they’ll be ready to go.”
