Mohawk earns share of title
Mohawk (54) Vs. New Brighton (33)
Feb 01, 2013
The Mohawk High girls basketball team is adding to the championship banner in their gymnasium.
Shelby Brown netted a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Warriors to a 54-33 WPIAL Section 2-AA home win over New Brighton.
The win secures at least a share of the section title for Mohawk (10-0 section, 14-5 overall), winners of five straight. It’s the first section crown for the Lady Warriors since the 2000-2001 season.
“We’re happy to get it this early,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said of the share of the section crown. “We’re not satisfied with it, though.
“We’re happy to be where we are, but we want to win the championship outright. I think the girls have the right mentality; they want the section championship on our wall only.”
The Lady Warriors will have a chance to claim the title outright at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Riverside (7-3, 11-8). Mohawk won the first meeting, 30-25.
O’Lare’s teams have yet to win on the Lady Panthers’ home floor in his six previous trips there.
“It’s going to be their senior night and they’re not going to want to lose their last home game,” O’Lare said of Riverside. “Our kids haven’t won there and they want to win. It’s going to be a challenge for us.”
Beaver Falls (9-2, 11-8) is Mohawk’s closest competitor, dropping both meetings to the Lady Warriors.
Mohawk closes section play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Shenango (0-10, 7-12).
Brown tossed in 15 of her markers in the first half to lift Mohawk to a 32-19 halftime lead.
“I thought Brown was very efficient,” O’Lare said. “She did what we expect of her and she led at both ends.”
Paige Ruby followed Brown’s effort with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Alexis Sheffield supplied 11 points to lead the Lady Lions (3-8, 5-12).
