The Mohawk High boys basketball team boosted its WPIAL playoff chances last night.
The Warriors ended a four-game losing skid with a 64-41 victory over visiting Section 2-AA Laurel.
“We desperately needed a win,” Mohawk coach Rob Fadden said. “We got back on track.”
Strong defense propelled the Warriors (6-5 section, 8-10 overall) through the first half, as Mohawk held a 24-11 advantage.
“Our last few games we didn’t play bad. We just go through times where we don’t score,” Fadden said. “I thought it was a very unselfish team effort.”
The brothers Grim, Jonathan and Lucas, had 11 points apiece to lead the Warriors. Saivon Watt was next with eight.
The Spartans (0-11, 4-15) couldn’t find a rhythm offensively until scoring 23 in the fourth quarter.
“They did a good job defensively. They put one on us. In every aspect, they outworked us,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “They have some bigger bodies and they forced us to shoot a lot of outside shots. We weren’t able to hit anything.”
Jacob Wilson scored 18 points to pace the Spartans. He is averaging 12.8 points a game in 18 contests this season.
