Mistakes hurt Laurel girls
New Brighton (42) Vs. Laurel (37)
Jan 29, 2013
The Laurel High girls basketball team gave away its slim playoff chances last night — literally.

The Lady Spartans turned the ball over a season-high 38 times and missed 26 uncontested shots in a WPIAL Section 2-AA loss at New Brighton.

“They were playing outside of themselves a little bit. They were trying to do more than their ability,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “I never think there’s a lack of effort on their part. It was just sloppy. New Brighton did not win this game, we lost it. We had all those missed money shots and wide-open layups.”

Despite a plethora of turnovers and missed opportunities, the Lady Spartans (2-7, 5-12) found themselves down by one with 30 seconds left. However, New Brighton’s Kaitlyn Hopkins ended Laurel’s chances of getting into the postseason by scoring four of her 10 points to end the game.

“They knew this game was for all the marbles,” Shevitz said. “We were supposed to win this game. They let it slip away. Our youth is still causing us problems, but we need to make better decisions.”

Ellen Shaffer paced the Lady Spartans with 12 points. Jessica Conrad was next with 11.

With the playoffs behind Laurel, Shevitz is hoping her young team will finish the season out strong and build momentum for the next year. There are no seniors on the Lady Spartans’ squad.

“It still means something to us, because we’re trying to find that team unity, continuity, maturity and growth,” she said. “I would like the maturity to show up to end this season, so we can build a foundation for this year.”
