Quigley tops Union girls
Quigley (50) Vs. Union (32)
Jan 25, 2013
Hopes for a section title came to a halt last night for the Union High girls basketball team.

Quigley Catholic grabbed control in the third quarter en route to a 50-32 WPIAL Section 1-A road win over the Lady Scots.

The Lady Spartans outscored Union 14-3 in the pivotal period to build a 39-23 advantage, snapping the Lady Scots’ win streak at seven.

“Quigley played the same defense that they played the whole game,” Union coach Brian Fadden said of the third quarter. “We shot the ball really well in the first quarter, then we didn’t shoot it very well the rest of the game.”

Quigley (8-0 section, 12-4 overall) won the first matchup, 57-24. But the Lady Scots (7-2, 10-5) made the rematch a game into the second half.

“We’re not happy with moral victories,” Fadden said. “Quigley is a good team.

“We wanted to win tonight. We weren’t looking to just compete. I thought we were competitive the first two quarters.”

Marissa Heaney netted a team-best 13 points for second-place Union.

Kristin Jackson led all scorers with 14 points for the section-leading Lady Spartans.

The Lady Scots, who have four section games left, will look to regroup against Cornell on Monday. Union won that initial matchup, 50-44.

“During this win streak we were on, we mentioned we might be fighting for a section title,” Fadden said. “That’s out of the picture now. But we have to bounce back and be ready to go against Cornell.”
