Mistakes cost Ellwood girls
Hopewell (69) Vs. Ellwood City (17)
Jan 22, 2013
A staggering total of 45 turnovers told the tale of Ellwood City’s Section 2-AAA loss at Hopewell.
“You can’t turn the ball over like that and expect to be competitive in a game,” Lady Wolverines coach Jolene Servick said. “We are not being smart or strong on offense.”
Ellwood City (1-7, 7-10) allowed 47 points in the first half, results that left a lot to be desired for the team’s head coach.
“I tell them that even when our offense is struggling, there is no excuse to not play hard and even more aggressive on defense. Defense takes absolutely no skill — just a lot of heart, aggressiveness and intensity,” Servick said. “I see sparks of it in some of the girls, but not as a team.”
The Lady Vikings’ Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, a Maryland recruit, did what she often does to the opposition, scoring 30 points with 9 of 12 shooting from the line.
Asia Borders had a team-high seven points for the Lady Wolverines. She became the second girl in Lawrence County (Mohawk’s Shelby Brown was the first) to eclipse the 200-point total for the season in a 14-point effort in a loss to Laurel over the weekend.
