Beaver Falls downs Laurel
Beaver Falls (58) Vs. Laurel (43)
Jan 18, 2013
A Section 2-AA loss to Beaver Falls didn’t lessen the enthusiasm of Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz.
“Even losing tonight, we gained,” she said. “Beaver Falls is a very tough place to play. The turnovers were way down. The rebounding was great. I have freshmen holding guards to one basket. The score is deceiving to how well the ladies played tonight.”
Laurel (2-5, 4-10) lost the battle in the first half, 38-19, and lost two starters to foul trouble early, Brooke Dicks and Jessica Conrad.
“The foul trouble so early definitely made us change what we wanted to do,” Shevitz said. “We were able to come back and win the second half though. They just had too much of a lead.”
What impressed Shevitz most was the play of freshman Kristin Dicks. The guard had the task of guarding the Lady Tigers’ Ayanna Vaughn, who averages 18 points a game. Dicks limited the high-powered guard to seven points.
“She played unbelievable defense. That’s a freshman on a senior guard,” Shevitz said. “She’s such a tenacious player on defense. She’s been holding the great players all season.”
Ellen Shaffer finished with a double-double for a fourth straight game, accumulating a team-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. The forward missed Laurel’s first six games of the season with an injury. Conrad was next with 14 points.
“Ellen’s playing very well and practicing well,” Shevitz said. “She’s finally getting comfortable.”
