Wilmington girls win at buzzer

Tessa Sikora made a layup at the buzzer to lift Wilmington past visiting West Middlesex in District 10, Region 2-AA action.
The Lady Greyhounds (2-3, 4-9) played most of the second half without coach Brandy Sanford, who was ejected after a double technical early in the third quarter. Wilmington led 30-17 at halftime, but the Ms. Reds tied it at 36 going to the fourth.
West Middlesex (1-4, 6-8) made three of its four free throws after the double technical to climb back into the game.
“I put my team in a bad situation,” Sanford said. “West Middlesex had made a run early in the third quarter; they came out and got it close. Then I got a double technical.
“We just kept battling. It was my ejection that put my team in a bad spot. But I’m proud of them. They were able to battle back and get the win.”
Alanna Elliott led the Lady Greyhounds with 18 points, including six in the fourth quarter. Carly Christofferson was next with 14 markers, while Sikora supplied 11 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Cassidy Marett handed out 10 assists for the winners.
Kelsey Murray and Alexis Summers recorded 12 points each for West Middlesex.
