Mohawk tops ’Cats on the road
Mohawk (43) Vs. Shenango (35)
Jan 16, 2013
The Mohawk High basketball team is rolling along.
The Warriors played solid second-half defense in a WPIAL Section 2-AA 43-35 triumph at Shenango.
“Any win on the road is a win we’ll take,” Mohawk coach Rob Fadden said.
After the Warriors jumped out to an 11-6 first-quarter lead, the Wildcats rallied to cut the deficit to three at the half.
“Shenango did a good job of running their offense and taking time off the clock,” Fadden said. “Offensively, that was probably our worst performance.”
Mohawk (5-2 section, 7-6 overall) was led by Lucas Grim’s 11-point performance. Saivon Watt was next with nine.
“Lucas is a tough kid. He’s the heart and soul of our team,” Fadden said. “He’s a big part of what we’re all about.”
The Wildcats (2-5, 4-8) shot 12 of 49 from the field and accumulated just 16 rebounds.
“We kind of struggled all game. We didn’t get into a rhythm offensively,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “We have to do a better job of getting offensive rebounds. That’s something we’ve been trying to work on all year.”
Greg DePorzio recorded a team-high 14 points for the Wildcats. Josh McCormick chipped in seven.
“Greg’s a senior. He’s a tough kid,” McQuiston said. “He gives us everything he’s got every night.”
The loss snaps the Wildcats’ two-game section winning streak.
“I thought the kids played hard again,” McQuiston said. “When you’re not shooting the ball well, it’s going to hurt you.”
