It all came down to the third quarter for the Mohawk and Shenango high girls basketball teams last night.

The Lady Warriors outscored their counterparts 13-5 in Period 3 and never looked back in a 40-35 WPIAL Section 2-AA road win.

Mohawk (6-0 in the section, 10-5 overall) led 27-23 lead going into the fourth period. The Lady Wildcats fell to 0-6 and 6-8.

Mohawk is in first place in the league by a game over Beaver Falls (5-1, 7-6).

“Just that third quarter did us in,” Lady Wildcats coach Brian Turk said. “The only five points we had in the quarter were from the foul line.”

“We played a good, senior-oriented team that’s undefeated now. They showed down the stretch why they are undefeated (in the section).”

Shenango built an 18-14 halftime advantage.

“We knew coming out of halftime we had to hold on to the lead,” Turk said. “Mohawk was really able to pressure us out in front and slow us down.”

Shelby Brown led Mohawk with 10 points and Lucia Fee was next with nine.

Angelina Sibeto supplied a game-high 12 points for Shenango and Jenna Petrucci chipped in with 11.

The Lady Warriors were 16 of 55 from the field compared to 13 of 56 for the Lady Wildcats.

“I don’t think it was anything we did to them defensively,” Turk said. “It wasn’t that they didn’t get the shots, they just didn’t go down.”
