Union rolls to easy win
Union (73) Vs. Cornell (30)
Jan 12, 2013
The Union High boys basketball team was focused on the task at hand last night.
That spelled doom for Cornell.
The Scotties jumped on the visiting Raiders early and cruised to a 73-30 WPIAL Section 1-A victory.
Union (3-0 section, 11-1 overall), ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, built a 29-10 lead after the first quarter.
“That’s what we wanted to do is get a quick start,” Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said. “Our ball pressure was good and we were just able to get some easy ones.”
Union was cautious of a letdown since it travels to Lincoln Park (3-0, 7-4) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a section showdown. Union never has won on the Leopards’ home floor. Lincoln Park is ranked No. 4 in Class A by the P-G.
“We were focused,” Smialowski said. “This was a perfect chance for a trap game. We had a good couple of days of practice.”
Markel Peace led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds for the Scotties and Joe Salmen added 13 markers. Tre Major chipped in with 12 points.
Drew Robinson handed out five assists for the winners.
Dan Weryha led Cornell (0-3, 3-9) with 12 points.
