Laurel (66) Vs. Wilmington (63)
Dec 29, 2012
The Laurel High boys basketball team hung on last night.

Wilmington’s Rocco Fagan missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Spartans survived for a 66-63 win in the consolation game of the Union Booster Tournament.

Laurel’s Josh Dando split a pair of foul shots with six seconds left for a 66-63 lead. The Greyhounds pushed the ball up the floor and Fagan had a look at a tying 3-pointer at the horn, but the ball rolled off the rim.

“This was a good win for us,” first-year Spartans coach Ken Locke said. “I thought all of our guys played well. It was a total team effort.”

Jacob Wilson netted a game-high 20 points for Laurel (2-6) and Scott Siddall was next with a career-high 19. Siddall was named to the all-tournament team.

“I thought Wilson did a great job,” Locke said. “He plays solid all the time. He had some big buckets and did a great job defensively.”

James Steele and Josh Finley tossed in nine points each for the winners. Steele added five steals and three blocks. Dando distributed seven assists with three rebounds and three steals.

“Steele had a great all-around game,” Locke said. “He was all over the place for us.”

Wilmington (3-4) lost to Shenango in the first round of the tournament, 62-59, in overtime.

The Greyhounds led 11-2 to start the game before settling for a 13-7 buffer after the opening period. Laurel rallied, outscoring Wilmington 24-15 in the second period for a 31-28 halftime edge.

“Unfortunately we lost both games,” Jeckavitch said. “We showed a lot more heart and toughness (last night).

“The kids played hard. We just have to learn how to win ballgames. We have to find a way to close things out.”

Fagan paced three Greyhounds in double figures with 18 points. Jesse Hilliard was next with 14 and Jordan Smith added 10.
