Union boys crush Laurel
Union (75) Vs. Laurel (47)
Dec 28, 2012
This year’s version of the Union boys basketball team put on a display for the 2002-2003 team last night.
Markel Peace bucketed 26 points, including 13 in the second quarter, as the Scotties were too much for Laurel, 75-47, in the Union Booster Tournament.
“It’s just been our pressure. We’re pressuring the ball well,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “Our athleticism is taking over from there. We’re double-teaming and creating opportunities.
“Peace had a very strong game with 18 of 26 in the first half. He attacked the hoop really well. He’s a hard guard. He’s elevated his game.”
Union’s 2003 WPIAL championship and state runner-up squad was honored before the game.
Tre Major notched 16 points and five rebounds for the winners. Benjamin Young was next with 12 points.
The Scotties (7-1) opened up a 43-23 advantage against the rebuilding Spartans (1-6) by halftime.
“I keep telling our young guys that’s where we want to be down the road,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “So far, we’ve had one of the toughest schedules. I think that’s only going to help us moving forward in the years to come playing these types of players and competition.”
The Spartans were without Stephen Avery, who is expected to miss a month because of a broken thumb. Scott Siddall replaced him and scored a team-high 14 points.
“He played well,” Locke said. “He handled himself pretty well for a freshman.”
