Laurel (49) Vs. Wilmington (34)
Dec 28, 2012
The Laurel High girls basketball team is healthy for the first time this season and it shows.
Ellen Shaffer and Brooke Dicks, who have missed a combined nine games this season, carried the Lady Spartans to a 49-34 victory over Wilmington in the Union Booster Tournament.
Shaffer appeared in her second game of the season and led Laurel with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Conrad was next with 11 points.
“It was nice to see Ellen shake the rust off and play a complete game,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said. “That’s what we expect out of her.”
Dicks, who suffered a concussion in a loss at Freedom in the third game of the season, lent a hand with a team-high seven assists to go with seven points. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Lady Spartans.
“It’s really nice to get a win. We needed a win,” Shevitz said. “We have everybody back and healthy. We’re still young. We’re still making mistakes. It’s starting to come together.”
Laurel (2-6) came into the nonsection battle with the Lady Greyhounds (1-6) having committed an average of 35 turnovers per game in its last three games.
“We took care of the basketball. We knocked our turnovers down to 12,” Shevitz said. “It was nice. I don’t think Wilmington pressured us as much. We took care of the ball a lot better.”
Wilmington won its previous meeting against Laurel two games prior, 51-43. Tessa Sikora carried the Lady Greyhounds on offense with 14 points and a team-high 17 rebounds. It wasn’t enough, as the Lady Spartans limited Wilmington to 14 first half points. Sarah Slonaker was next with 12 rebounds to go with seven points.
“Laurel was able to put the ball inside,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said. “Their post players were able to do whatever they wanted with it.
“They did have two players back from injury the first time they played them. That helped them. We played three quarters. Our fourth quarter was terrible. We kind of shut down.”
