The Wilmington High girls basketball team is making a case for a District 10, Class AA at-large playoff berth.
And Alanna Elliott is playing a significant role.
Elliott poured in a career-high 35 points to lead the Lady Greyhounds to a 71-43 Region 2-AA win over visiting Reynolds last night.
A 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, Elliott netted 21 of her points in the second half.
“Alanna had a very nice game,” Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said. “She was on (last night). When she’s on, she’s on.
“She was getting a lot of open shots and the girls were setting a lot of good screens; she was getting to the hoop really well.”
The Lady Greyhounds (6-5 region, 12-9 overall) are locked into fourth place in the region. They host region rival Greenville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the regular season finale.
District 10 will announce the playoff pairings this weekend. The amount of at-large playoff spots vary from region to region.
“It doesn’t change our status,” Sanford said of her team’s playoff position. “Being locked into that spot, mentally, it’s big for us.
“The girls know there’s no pressure. The situation we’re in right now, as a solid fourth-place team, some people might view it as a negative thing. Of course we’d like to be in third or even higher. But we’re just going to go out and play hard and prove we belong.”
Mackenzie Hiers followed Elliott’s effort with 12 points and Carly Christofferson was next with 11.
Jocelyn Yahner led the Lady Raiders (2-9, 5-14) with 12 markers.
