Union now faces must-win
Quigley (71) Vs. Union (45)
Feb 07, 2012
The playoffs come down to one game for the Union High girls basketball team.

Quigley Catholic outscored the Lady Scots by 20 points over the last three quarters to record a 71-45 WPIAL Section 1-A road win.

Union (5-6 section,12-9) must beat Western Beaver (0-11, 0-15) on the road on Thursday and have Cornell (6-5, 10-11) lose to visiting Rochester (7-4, 10-11) to secure a playoff spot. That’s the only scenario that will work for the Lady Scots to move on.

“It’s as simple as that,” Union coach Brian Fadden said.

The Lady Scots’ Savannah Partridge left the game three minutes in with a knee injury and didn’t return.

Marissa Heaney led Union with 14 points and her twin sister Miranda Heaney chipped in with 12. Katelyn Kosciuszko tossed in 10 markers.

Allison Bertolino pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and Kaylee Lemmon added 10 for the Lady Scots, who were outscored 51-31 in the second half.

Jennifer Deltondo paced all scorers with 22 points for the section-champion Lady Spartans (11-0, 16-4). She scored 11 of her points in the first quarter and nine more in the third.

Quigley Catholic held a 40-25 halftime advantage.

“They shot the ball incredibly well in the first half,” Fadden said. “They were getting shots that we weren’t.”
